Edward Callow was William's nephew. He enlisted on 16th November 1915, and was discharged on 4th February 1919, having been found medically unfit for further service. He served in the 23rd Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment, which was part of the 123rd Brigade of the 41st Division and also known as the 'second football regiment' - a battalion raised in London and attracting many local footballers.
It does appear from the address William records that he served at headquarters as a signaller. This probably means he was a Battalion Headquarters Signaller who would carry messages or take ammunition or supplies to the front.
The division was posted to Italy at roughly the same time William Whitmore was there, though they don't appear to have seen action together in France.
Other battalions in the 123rd brigade included:
The 41st division was involved in several engagements which are listed below. Please note: as with all tables like this one, remember that it lists only engagements with the enemy. Troops would spend considerable amounts of time each year in the trenches, and within firing range of the enemy. Shelling and sniping would be a permanent danger, which lessened (but did not disappear) when there was no major engagement.
